The flood situation in the states of Assam and Gujarat is still grim and PM Modi will visit Assam on August 1 to assess the situation. He will also discuss the matters related to flood with CM Sarbananda Sonowal and senior state officials. The Central government has already announced compensation of Rs. 2 lakh for the next kin of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 for those who have been injured in these floods. This compensation has been granted under the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
The Central government has already sent a seven-member inter-ministerial team on 25th July to Assam for making on-spot assessments of the damages that are the result of these floods. The team was on a visit for four days and it will also give recommendations along with the report to the government on the matter of releasing funds early.
However, the opposition is charging the government of neglecting Assam and not providing proper assistance. It is also saying that the Central government was quick to help Gujarat as elections in the state are to going to take place soon.
Minister of State for Home, Kiren Rijiju, responded on the issue in Rajya Sabha,
“I can assure this House that the government is fully committed to ensure that nobody suffers due to want of the action from the Government of India. We are fully committed. We reassure state governments that we will be there whenever you require us. Whether it is Assam or the current problem being faced in Gujarat, the disaster response has been quickest ever possible.”
He further added,
“It is not easy to assess the total cost of damage at one go. It takes time. There are systems. To say that the systems get very late may not be appropriate.”
On the issue of sending funds early to Gujarat, he said that the relief fund of Rs. 500 crore which was sent to Gujarat was not from National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF). It was from State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) which was already due to the state.
The Indian celebrities are also coming forward to help public of Gujarat and Assam. Aamir Khan has not only used social media as a medium to request his fans to donate but also donated Rs. 25 lakhs to the Assam government for its relief operations.
He also posted a video in which he said,
